I've always loved the versatility of the mandolin. You can play jazz and bluegrass and everything in between on it. I searched a long time before I bought this one. It is an A-50 model by Gibson and was built in 1954. I've had a bunch of work done to it and now it plays as lovely as it sounds; which is quite sweet. It is a great instrument for traveling not only because it's easy to transport, but also because it sounds so great. It has that deep woody tone that can only come from an older instrument. Some folks are amazed that I'll travel with this mandolin. But you know, I just can't bring myself to play an instrument that doesn't make the sounds I want.
